Here's what makes it actually work in the real world:
Three Ways to Pair a Vehicle
- Manual setup โ Open the Vehicle screen, tap Bluetooth Auto-Detect, pick your car's stereo from your phone's paired devices. One tap and you're done.
- Passive learning โ If you forget to set it up, TrakMiles Pro watches. After a few trips where you've assigned the same vehicle while connected to the same Bluetooth device, the app pops a quiet notification: "We noticed you usually drive [Vehicle] when [Device] is connected. Tap to auto-tag future trips." One tap and it's set.
- Unknown device prompt โ Bought a new car? Borrowed a friend's rental? When a Bluetooth device connects that we don't have a fingerprint for, you get a one-tap prompt to assign it. Or skip it. The trip still records.
The Multi-Car Household Problem (Solved)
Here's the scenario that broke older mileage trackers: you and your spouse both work from home, drive different vehicles, and leave for work at the same time. As you both back out of the garage, your phone briefly sees both Bluetooth devices in range.
Which vehicle is the trip for? An old-school auto-tracker would guess โ usually wrong, usually silently.

Privacy: Your Bluetooth MAC Address Never Leaves Your Phone
Bluetooth-based features can feel uncomfortable for a good reason: a raw MAC address is a persistent device identifier. If it gets stored somewhere โ especially in the cloud โ it can be linked to you across services. We're not doing that.
๐ How TrakMiles Pro handles Bluetooth data:
When a Bluetooth device connects, we read the MAC address only long enough to compute a SHA-256 hash. The raw value is then discarded. Only the hash is stored โ and only on your phone, never synced to the cloud.
The hash is a one-way fingerprint. It tells your app "this is the same device I saw last time" but doesn't reveal what the original MAC was, doesn't share across phones, and doesn't follow you anywhere.
You can disable Auto-Detect entirely from Settings, which clears the fingerprint table. Done. Nothing left.
The Bluetooth permission TrakMiles Pro requests on Android 12+ is BLUETOOTH_CONNECT, used only to read the names and connection state of devices currently connected to your phone. It does not read messages, audio, or any other Bluetooth data. The permission is locally scoped โ Android shows you exactly when and how it's used.
How to Turn It On (Under 90 Seconds)
- Open TrakMiles Pro on your phone. Make sure you've updated to v3.6 or later (Play Store will prompt you).
- Make sure your car's stereo is connected to your phone. Start the car, let the Bluetooth handshake happen.
- In TrakMiles, tap the Mileage tab. Open the โฎ menu in the top-right corner and tap "Vehicles."
- Tap your vehicle in the list, then tap "Bluetooth Auto-Detect."
- Grant the Bluetooth permission when prompted (Android 12+ only).
- Tap "Add Bluetooth Device" and pick your car's stereo from the list of paired devices.
- Done. The next time you start driving with that Bluetooth connected, the trip auto-tags to that vehicle.
Repeat for each vehicle you regularly drive. If you only have one vehicle, you're done after the first one โ but having it set up still helps the app distinguish "driving" from "passenger in someone else's car."
Why This Matters at Tax Time
The 2026 IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5ยข per business mile, up from 70ยข in 2025. At that rate, every 100 business miles correctly logged is worth $72.50 in deductible expense. Every 100 miles mis-allocated to the wrong vehicle opens you up to a problem if anyone ever audits:
- If you take actual expense for one vehicle and standard for another, mixing miles between them creates a recordkeeping inconsistency the IRS specifically watches for.
- If you ever sell one of the vehicles, the depreciation reconciliation depends on which trips were on which car. Miscounted miles inflate the wrong vehicle's adjusted basis.
- If you're a contractor with both a personal car and a dedicated work van, mixing them on Schedule C is a flag. Distinct vehicles need distinct records.
Auto-Detect is how you get audit-defensible records without thinking about it. The app does the bookkeeping at the moment of every trip start, not later from memory.
What's Not Covered (Yet)
Auto-Detect ships with v3.6 supporting the most common pairing path โ classic Bluetooth (A2DP and HEADSET profiles), which covers virtually every factory car stereo and aftermarket head unit. A few things we don't cover yet:
- Bluetooth LE Audio (LE Audio profiles). A handful of 2025+ vehicles use LE Audio. We'll add support as it becomes more common.
- Aux-cord-only vehicles. If your car only takes a 3.5mm aux cable, there's no Bluetooth signal to detect. Stick with manual or motion-triggered detection.
- Phones that aren't paired to the car stereo. If you usually keep your phone disconnected from your car (no music streaming, no hands-free), Auto-Detect won't fire. Pair once and it's set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a new car for this to work?
No. If your car has Bluetooth โ which means roughly any vehicle made since 2010 โ Auto-Detect works. You just need to pair your phone to the car's stereo, which you've probably already done for hands-free calling or music.
Will this drain my battery?
No measurable impact. We hook into Android's existing Bluetooth connect/disconnect events โ no continuous scanning, no GPS polling, no background services running on top of what's already there. The receiver wakes up only when a device connects or disconnects, runs for a few milliseconds, and goes back to sleep.
What if I drive a rental, a borrowed car, or my friend's vehicle?
The first time your phone connects to a Bluetooth device the app doesn't recognize, you get a one-tap prompt: pick a vehicle from your list to assign this trip to, or skip the prompt and the trip uses your default vehicle. Either way, the trip still records.
Can I turn it off completely?
Yes. Open Settings inside TrakMiles Pro and toggle "Auto-detect vehicle from Bluetooth" off. The app reverts to using your default vehicle for every trip. Your saved Bluetooth fingerprints are preserved โ turn it back on later and everything resumes.
How is this different from auto-start?
Auto-start uses GPS speed to begin recording a trip when you start driving. Auto-Detect uses Bluetooth to figure out which vehicle the trip is for. They work together โ auto-start says "trip is happening," Auto-Detect says "this trip is in the Honda."
