Most Mobile Mechanics Leave Thousands on the Table

You drive between jobs, run for parts, and make house calls every day — but without a system, those deductible miles and business expenses disappear at tax time.

🚫

No One Tracks Your Miles for You

No app or dispatcher logs your miles. Every job, every parts run, every house call — if you don't record it, it never happened. Most mechanics guess at year-end and lose thousands in deductions.

📋

Spreadsheets Don't Survive Audits

The IRS requires a contemporaneous mileage log — recorded at the time, not reconstructed in December. A GPS-based tracker with date, location, and purpose for every trip is the gold standard for an audit.

💸

Revenue Isn't Profit

After parts, fuel, tools, insurance, and consumables — how much did you actually earn this month? Without expense tracking and a P&L, you're guessing. Most mechanics have no idea what their true profit margin is.

Everything a Mobile Mechanic Needs — in One App

TrakMiles Pro replaces your mileage log, expense tracker, revenue spreadsheet, and tax prep software — all on your phone, all working together.

🛰️

Automatic GPS Mileage Tracking

Detects when you start driving and records every trip — between jobs, on parts runs, and to house calls. No buttons, no forgetting. Every mile logged with date, location, distance, and purpose.

🚗

Vehicle Auto-Detection (Multi-Vehicle)

Run a service van during the week and a personal truck on side jobs? TrakMiles pairs with each vehicle's Bluetooth and auto-tags every trip to the right vehicle profile. No more "wait, which vehicle was that?" at tax time.

💰

Revenue Tracking by Job

Log revenue by customer or job, track payment dates, and see your actual income by week, month, or year. Compare performance across periods and know exactly where your money comes from.

🧾

Expense & Tool Management

Track tools, parts, consumables, insurance, diagnostic software, and every other business expense. Snap a photo of a parts receipt and it reads the vendor and amount. Categorized for Schedule C automatically.

📊

Profit & Loss Reports

See your real profit — revenue minus all expenses — by week, month, quarter, or year. Know whether you're actually making money or just staying busy.

🏛️

Schedule C Tax Preparation

Maps your mileage, tools, and expenses directly to IRS Schedule C line items. Compares standard mileage vs actual expenses to ensure you always claim the larger deduction. Export to PDF or CSV for your accountant.

👥

Team & Shop Mode

Running a crew? Company Mode syncs expenses and shared accounts across team members with combined P&L reporting. Each mechanic keeps their own books, the owner sees the full picture.

Mobile Mechanic Tax & Mileage Questions

Everything mobile mechanics need to know about tracking miles and business expenses.

Can mobile mechanics deduct mileage?
Yes. Self-employed mobile mechanics can deduct all business miles at the IRS standard mileage rate of 72.5 cents per mile (Jan–Jun 2026; 76 cents Jul–Dec) for 2026. This includes driving between customer jobs, house calls, parts runs, and trips to pick up tools or equipment. Your commute from home to a fixed shop is not deductible, but driving from your home base to a job site is. Read our mobile mechanic tax deductions guide for details.
What business expenses can mobile mechanics deduct?
Deductible expenses include tools under $2,500 (de minimis safe harbor), larger equipment via Section 179 or depreciation, consumables (rags, cleaners, lubricants, fasteners), safety gear, insurance (general liability, garage keepers, tool floater), diagnostic software, tolls and parking, and the business portion of your cell phone. All require receipts and documentation. See our complete deductions guide for the full list.
How many business miles does a typical mobile mechanic drive?
Active mobile mechanics typically drive 20,000 to 30,000 business miles per year, moving between jobs all day. At the 2026 IRS rate (72.5¢ H1, 76¢ H2), that's a tax deduction of $14,500 to $21,750 — worth $3,200 to $4,800 in actual tax savings at the 22% bracket. Use our free calculator to see your exact number.
Do I need to make quarterly estimated tax payments?
If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in federal taxes for the year, the IRS requires quarterly estimated payments. For 2026, the deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 (2027). Self-employment tax alone is 15.3% of net earnings. Most mechanics should set aside 25-30% of net income. TrakMiles Pro tracks your P&L in real time so you always know where you stand. Read our quarterly tax deadline guide.
Standard mileage rate or actual expenses — which is better?
For most mobile mechanics, the standard mileage rate (72.5¢/mile Jan–Jun 2026, 76¢ Jul–Dec) is simpler and produces a larger deduction because you drive high mileage. The actual expenses method can win if you run a heavy service truck with unusually high operating costs. TrakMiles Pro's Schedule C Helper calculates both methods and shows you which saves more. Read our mobile mechanic tax guide.
Is TrakMiles Pro free for mobile mechanics?
TrakMiles Pro offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. After the trial, a monthly ($4.99/mo) or annual ($34.99/yr) subscription provides unlimited GPS mileage tracking, Vehicle Auto-Detection, revenue tracking, expense and tool management, P&L reports, time clock, and Schedule C tax preparation. One app replaces your mileage log, expense tracker, and tax prep software.
